The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the ability to challenge particular calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
