The artist has handed over the full amount of his £25,000 honor winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which works to preserve the Britain's small live music spots.

Fender was awarded the award on 16 October as his latest record his work was named the best record of the past year.

The musician has opted to donate the funds to the MVT, in appreciation of the essential function small stages had in his beginning days.

"As an artist would not have achieved this success if it weren't for all the gigs I played around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," stated the artist. "These locations are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these venues have ceased operations – approximately 16 percent of the total UK scene.

In the last year, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which benefits local stages.

Fender also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help numerous small stages across the UK.

These funds assisted spaces that were dealing with potential shutdown due to challenges arising from water damage, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces were granted funding support in modernizing amenities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted musicians and fans.

"The notion that money from performances in large arenas supports the independent spots, where it all starts for artists like me, is just sensible," the star has stated.

He is not the first artist to donate his Mercury Prize funds to charitable organizations.

Back when Pulp received the award in the mid-90s for their release their work, frontman the singer stated that the act would donate their cash to the organization the charity.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her award across multiple organizations, such as the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also donated a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they needed better apparatus," Ms Dynamite shared with outlets.

Two years ago, they gave their funds to the community center that supported their act, as well as other local music groups.

Additionally winners that year the group donated their award to a MS organization after a close contact was found to have the disease.

"The victory was quite enough," remarked singer the singer. "The money was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

In the past week, the MVT shared it had rescued several grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under community ownership.

The Joiners in Southampton and The Croft in that location were acquired under the public acquisition scheme, which is funded by a national body and supporters who acquire "shares" in the venues.
